THE BASICS

Who are you?

Long story short: a yogi, activist, writer, artist, and recovering perfectionist. Learn more about me here.

Where are you from?

I was born in Vegas (so if you needed proof that what happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas, you’re lookin’ at her, baby), but have lived most of my life in California. Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, I now spend most of my time hanging around a little further south in Santa Cruz.

What’s this film thing about?

I’m the subject of a documentary about yoga, eating disorders, and healing, titled “I Am Maris” by Laura VanZee Taylor and ro*co films. Learn more about the film here.

What do you write about?

Yoga, mental health, and the mistakes I’ve made along the journey of this lifetime. Hopefully me learning the hard way can help you either avoid the mistakes I’ve made, or help you find the silver linings in the ones you will make.


YOGA

How long have you been doing yoga?

I started practicing when I was 14, and began my teacher training at 15.

 

What kind of yoga do you teach?

My training was predominantly Vinyasa Flow based, although I draw inspiration from Ashtanga and teach Yin, Gentle Flow, and other styles of classes. Read my class description here.

Where do you teach?

At Just Be Yoga Walnut Creek & Danville, the University of California, Santa Cruz, and anywhere else that will have me.

 

How do I start practicing yoga?

Do you do anything other than yoga for exercise?

Nope! I love hiking, weightlifting, paddle boarding, and pretty much anything else that gets my body moving. I used to swim competitively, but that’s a past life.

What yoga mat do you use?

I mostly practice on this mat, but use this one for travel and this one for my Yin/Restorative practice.
